A partnership between Washtenaw County and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation is hoping to help stimulate job growth through a project called Seeds for Change.

Seeds for Change is a commercial kitchen incubator and job trainer project that hopes to help people in Washtenaw County find stable jobs and help small businesses get started.

Commercial kitchen incubators are nothing new, and have been growing in number throughout the country. Several have sprung up in Michigan in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Traverse City.

The kitchen would have space for a variety of types of food production, and budding business owners would be able to rent time and space within the kitchen to produce their products.

Health code regulations and expensive equipment often make it difficult for small businesses to get off the ground.

The idea is that by letting entrepreneurs skip over those initial barriers the businesses can develop. Owners can then purchase their own space and equipment when they are in a financially sound place to do so, giving the business a better chance at survival.
