Eight businesses in the Brockton area will receive nearly $1 million in state Workforce Training Fund grants in a move that would produce dozens of new jobs.

Companies in Avon, Brockton, Stoughton and Taunton will receive a total of $969,492 to offer up to two years of training in areas including customer service, sales, machining, milling and computer technology.

Since January, 138 companies statewide have received $11.4 million in grants to train and hire new employees. State officials said the grants would create approximately 1,700 new jobs and train a total of 13,000 workers.

Locally, the following businesses received grants in:

Avon: Aqua-Leisure Industries Inc., $44,820

Brockton: Bridgewater Goddard Park Medical Association Inc. (Signature Healthcare), $164,470; Crescent Credit Union, $67,076; Metro South Chamber of Commerce, $249,234; and SIE Computing Solutions Inc., $122,002

Stoughton: MATS INC, $43,890

Taunton: Bristol County Savings Bank, $250,000; CBM Industries, Inc., $28,000

Since 2007, the Workforce Training Fund has spent more than $64 million to train 85,000 workers statewide in a range of critical and emerging industries.

The fiscal 2012 budget established the fund as a trust fund, allowing for collection and disbursement of funds as needed by businesses, rather than on an annual appropriation cycle.

Next year, the Workforce Training Fund will have approximately $18 million in grants available. Any business that pays into it is eligible to apply. Grants are available for up to $250,000.

Program options include matching grants, trainings for small businesses and new worker training grants for veterans or individuals who have been unemployed for at least six months.
