A total of $25,000 was reserved for the program, which would award grants of as much as $5,000 to new small businesses.
But several members of the community and competing businesses expressed concerns that the program was unfair after the council voted to award Raab Family Chiropractic on North Broad Street a publicly funded $5,000 grant.
On Monday, the council and Lampasas Economic Development Corp. board members agreed that awarding future grants to small businesses would provoke similar complaints because one could always find competition, according to council members.
Dr. Reg Cully of the chiropractic center will still receive the $5,000 grant, but the repeal of the program goes into effect immediately, Assistant City Secretary Ursula Paddie said Tuesday.
While no move has been made to allot the other $20,000 reserved for the program, one council member suggested that the money be used for a building facade movement grant.
A building facade grant would act as a matching grant for companies wishing to improve the exterior of their buildings to make them more visually appealing.
If the idea is approved, both the city and the business will be responsible to provide some of the funding.
