Small Business Grant | "Supporting small businesses a good deal"

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a little-known campaign called Small Business Saturday. Begun two years ago by American Express in an effort to encourage residents to support their local small business community on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, it is slowly gaining momentum.

This is welcome news for our small business owners and job seekers who have borne the brunt of the nation’s recent devastating recession. Unfortunately, as we are all well aware, recovery has been painstakingly slow both nationally and on the state level.

According to the Small Business Administration, our nation’s small shops employ half of all private sector employees. In New Jersey, small businesses — those with fewer than 50 employees — comprise more than 96 percent of all businesses statewide and employ more than 35 percent of the state’s total workforce. They are, without doubt, the backbone of our national and state economies as they are our primary job creators. And when they suffer, all of us suffer. Conversely, when they prosper, so do our economies.

With the holiday season officially underway, I encourage our residents to continue to extend the concept of “Small Business Saturday,” throughout the entire season — and beyond — by supporting their local stores. The benefits are many: easier parking, smaller crowds and personalized service. More importantly, as we work to regain our economic footing, the SBA reminds us that for every $100 spent locally, over two-thirds is returned to the community. I believe this is a good deal no matter what the season.
