Suncoast Community Capital will launch a new coaching and technical assistance program for small businesses in the Manatee-Sarasota area.
The program, known as the Kauffman Foundation Urban Entrepreneur Partnership, will assist businesses in growing to scale, which will create local jobs and provide economic development opportunities.
A $50,000 Wells Fargo investment and $40,000 grant from the Bradenton Central Community Redevelopment Agency provided the project’s seed money. It will be the first Kauffman program in the state.
The project will be introduced to the community at an invitation-only luncheon Jan. 18 at IMG Academies Golf & Country Club.
Business of Biotech conference Feb. 6
TAMPA -- Moffitt Cancer Center will host its sixth-annual Business of Biotech conference from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building, 12902 Magnolia Drive. This year’s theme is “Turning Vision into Reality.”
The keynote speaker is Risa Stack with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a venture capital partnership headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area with a large capital base for investment. Since 1972, the company has invested in more than 575 technology companies, which have accrued market valuations exceeding $500 billion and employ more than 400,000.
The conference focuses on opportunities for businesses and investors to network and collaborate in life sciences, biotechnology, medical devices, angel investing, venture capital, finance and intellectual property. In addition, the Tampa Bay Partnership will be releasing a biotech heat map at the conference showing all biotech companies and research institutions.

Business offers personal care for seniors
SARASOTA -- Good Life Care LLC, which offers personalized services for seniors such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, errands, shopping, transportation and pet care, has opened in Sarasota.
The company is locally owned by Diane Walz who has 15 years of professional experience working with senior citizens and years of personal experience as a caregiver.
The business, which operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, can be reached at 941-822-0092. Web site is www.goodlifecare4u.com.
Other one time services and special requests, such as gift wrapping, holiday decorating, setting up computers and travel assistance are also offered.
Caregivers are screened personally by the owner and all have passed Level II background checks. Good Life Care LLC is a member of Companion Connection Senior Care, a national organization of nonmedical home care agencies and the Sarasota County Aging Network.
Chef competition slated for Jan. 25
MANATEE -- Taste Dining & Travel Magazine is holding its second annual Chef’s Competition for Bradenton chefs and restaurants at 6 p.m. Jan. 25.
The event, which will be held at Freedom Village Center, 6406 21st Ave. W., is a fundraiser for the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee.
Chefs participating include Jim Moretti of The Martini Bistro, David Shiplett of SoMa Diner, Greg Campbell of Pier 22 and Gaetano Cannata of Ortygia.
An appetizer, 10 small-plate entrees, desserts and three wines will be offered by $45.
Restaurant property sold in Sarasota
SARASOTA -- The restaurant property that currently houses the Station 400 restaurant at 1503 Fourth St., Sarasota, recently was purchased by the Cornelius Family, LLC, a Michigan company for $675,000. Villa De Santa Monika, a Nevada company, sold the 1,590-square-foot historic building brought to Sarasota piece by piece, is a replica of the 1858 depot formerly located in Kneeland, Ind. Allen Conrad with ReMax Alliance Group represented the buyer while Brad Lindberg with the Sperry Van Ness Commercial Advisory Group’s Sarasota office represented the seller.
