If you’d like to make your dream of starting a business a reality, a free course sponsored by Catholic Charities Houma-Thibodaux could help.
The group’s Coastal Entrepreneurs’ Net to Success, C.E.N.T.S., which teaches entrepreneurs how to get their business going, starts Tuesday at 1220 Aycock St., Houma.
Classes are held one evening a week for eight weeks.
Business owner and C.E.N.T.S. program manager Brooks Lirette said the upcoming class is booked up, but she will be offering another one in April.
“The first time we did this was in August of 1992 following Hurricane Andrew,” the 30-year-old owner of Treasured Lawns and Gardens said. “This is a popular program judging by the fact that it always books up quickly.”
C.E.N.T.S. covers topics like making a business plan, getting a loan, budgeting, marketing and promotion, and how to keep sound financial records.
In its brochure, C.E.N.T.S. representatives say they will answer questions such as “Have you defined your goals?,” “Are you willing to spend time on activities you don’t like, as well as those you do like to make it work?” and “Do you have a product/service that people will buy and is it feasible?”
“You want to have a good idea when setting up a new business because the truth is a lot of businesses fail to make it,” Lirette said. “We look at a lot of the issues a new business owner faces.”
Along with offering initial training, C.E.N.T.S. provides post-training support.
“Even with a business background there was a lot I had to learn when setting up my business,” Lirette said. “Those things I learned and figured out I pass on to those attending the class in an attempt to make their lives easier.”
One of Lirette’s students who had glowing reviews of C.E.N.T.S. was Wanda Liner. Liner went through the C.E.N.T.S. program last September.
“The United Houma Nation talked to me about the class and that’s how I found out about it,” Liner said. “I learned a lot about starting a business thanks to the program.”
Liner said she has her business, A&W Concrete, up and running.
“I would recommend the program to everyone because it definitely helped me learn about the many things you have to do to go into business for yourself,” she said.
