Small businesses continue to seek guidance from the county’s latest resource center.

On Nov. 17, the University of Texas-San Antonio Small Business Development Center opened in New Braunfels. The center offers free guidance for existing and prospective small business owners in the New Braunfels, Schertz and Seguin areas.

Since its opening, center manager Sharon Miller said she’s seen a steady stream of new clients come through the door.

“It seems like every day we are meeting with a number of owners now,” Miller said. “So many people are coming to us. It’s been great.”

The center, as Miller calls it, is “an A-to-Z resource” for owners. From developing an opening strategy plan to tightening an existing budget, the center offers guidance on all clients.

Seeking such guidance are Gatlyn and Marla McDonald, owners of Birdee’s Golf Center on W. Klein Road, New Braunfels.

The couple bought the driving range in 2009, but they said they felt their business model could use some help. Through word of mouth, the McDonalds were directed to the small business center in December — and they said they could not be more pleased with the results.

“We saw a lot of potential in going to the center,” Gatlyn said. “We’ve been running this place for a couple years now but we wanted to move forward. ... we know we can do more.”

“We felt like we were at a pivotal point with our business,” Marla added. “We want to work toward a future with it.”

Since then, Miller and center representatives have been continually working with the McDonalds. Miller has been working so closely with the McDonalds, in fact, she said she’s getting the impression they are starting to flinch when she calls them with more assignments.

“At first they seemed to really like when I called with more suggestions, but now they seem to cringe a bit because I keep calling them with more,” Miller said. “But, really, we’ve been working very well together.”

Miller added she has focussed on helping the McDonalds rewrite their business plan, planning for the future, improve their purchasing from companies, and taking advantage of advertising opportunities. She has also gotten Gatlyn to enroll in an accounting course to make the driving range even more efficient.

“We’re working out all their options for purchasing and staying current,” Miller said.

“You’ve got to stay fresh with any plan you make. The goal is always moving so you’ve got to stay strong.”
