When Carl Adams was considering relocating his business, he was attracted to the “overall ambiance of downtown.”
When he found out the Panama City Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) offered a grant to encourage job creation, the area was even better.
Late last year he signed a three-year lease to move his company, PCE, an engineering contractor certified by the Small Business Administration as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, from Lynn Haven to downtown Panama City. The company on Tuesday evening received a $10,000 grant in return for bringing 10 jobs downtown.
Since the city created a grant program in October to encourage job creation and retention in the CRAs, five jobs have been retained and 26 attracted, William Whitson, the city’s CRA director, said.
Adams said the atmosphere of downtown seemed to be more attractive than his current location for employees and customers, and he was told good things were expected for downtown.
If things turn out well, he said he’s prepared to invest heavily in the area.
During meetings of the Panama City Commission and Community Redevelopment Agency, commissioners also:
• Named the Fire Department Training Academy in honor of Chief Jerry W. Prater.
• Approved creation of a Cleanup and Abatement Program to encourage cleanup in the Downtown North CRA District. The program includes allocation of $85,000 to help clean up public and private property.
• Approved changes to land development regulations to create a downtown zoning district.
• Approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation for installation of a railway crossing traffic control device on Kraft Avenue. FDOT will pay the $169,458 installation cost and the city and Bayline Railroad would be required to contribute $3,402 annually for maintenance.
