Living in the past could have a negative effect on your small business' revenue, as even loyal customers may find the allure of a more technologically advanced competitor too strong to ignore. The Daily Comet recently offered an overview of several trends small enterprises can't afford to ignore.

If your company has yet to secure a social networking presence - or you jumped on the bandwagon several years ago but stopped with MySpace - then it's time to expand your online reach. Make an effort to leverage popular social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook with the aim of both reaching new customers and interacting with existing ones.

Mobile is another channel that's seen huge growth over the past couple of years. Thanks to the advent of location-based smartphone applications like Foursquare, companies have a whole new platform through which to engage in business advertising and offer deals and other incentives.

The cloud gets less press than social media and mobile, but it's no less important. Moving your business online and running it through internet applications rather than remote servers allows entrepreneurs to spend less time on their small enterprise's infrastructure and more on actually running their business. Technical glitches are likely to significantly lessen, and any problems that do occur are the cloud vendor's problem and not yours.

An additional benefit to cloud applications is that they can be leveraged to provide analytics. This can help you gauge which of your internet-based business marketing efforts were most successful, by providing, for example, data about how many people opened your monthly email newsletter and which articles or products garnered the most clicks.

Of course, despite technological advances, there will always be a place for more traditional business promotions, such as direct mail campaigns and giving away personalized pens.
