The reputation of being one of the fattest counties in the state may be a blessing in disguise.
That's because Kern County is one of several counties in the nation selected for a health work site wellness program funded by a free federal grant.
15 local companies will be selected to take part in the free wellness program. To be considered, companies must offer health insurance and a plan to implement a wellness program.
Kern County was selected for the southwest region, representing California, Nevada and Mexico. It leads the nation, with several companies signing up to have this program in their workplace.
Studies show one in three Americans is overweight. And, the numbers in Kern County are worse, six out of ten.
But, the future for getting healthy may be brighter on the business front.
"The weird part is sometimes out of bad things, good things happen. The reason Kern County got selected for this grant was our health statistic rates, our economic disparity a number of uninsured people," said Tim Terrio, Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce.
Tim Terrio is talking about a free wellness program that 15 Kern County businesses will be chosen to receive from a federal grant.
"We need to get healthier, so this just came at a perfect time to help businesses get healthier," said David Kaiser, owner of Global CTI Group.
Businesses are signing up fast to take part in the program, which could plant a seed for a healthier lifestyle for hundreds of working Kern County residents.
"I have a healthy staff, but I have thought of adding this type of program for our employees. It's a great morale booster," said Kaiser.
150 businesses can register. 15 will receive the comprehensive program and will get a health risk assessment over a two-year period. The other 135 will get free seminars to create their own wellness plan.
