Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Thursday said five small businesses across the state, including a growing Norwich-based printing company, will receive grants through the new Small Business Express Program so they can expand and create additional jobs.

The local firm, Norwich Printing Co., was founded in 1992 as part of the Minuteman Press franchise and has since grown from a two-person shop to eight full-time employees.

Malloy said Norwich Printing will receive a $48,357 grant as part of the business express program, which it will use to purchase four new pieces of equipment as part of its overall expansion.

The state's small-business program, also known as EXP, was created during this past year's October special legislative session on jobs and the economy. The program will provide a total of $100 million to jumpstart small-business hiring and fund various capital investments. The program is administered by the state's Department of Economic and Community Development and offers loans and matching state grants to firms with fewer than 50 employees.

The other firms that will receive business-express program assistance are the Connecticut Casket Co. in Willimantic; Elka Precision in Plainville, a manufacturer; the Wooden-it-be-Nice consignment-furniture company in Marlborough, and My Three Sons in Norwalk, which is an indoor family entertainment center.

In announcing the five new business-express recipients, Malloy said small businesses are crucial to growing Connecticut's slowly recovering economy. "Last year, when I met with business owners and chief executives on my Jobs Tour, I heard firsthand about the tough challenges they face and what they needed to overcome them," said Malloy in prepared remarks. He said the Small Business Express Program would provide an accessible source of much-needed funding to assist small businesses. "It's just one more way we're trying to begin an economic revival in cities and towns across our state," said the governor.
