Students at schools in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst district can walk the halls feeling safer after a combination of district funds and grant money has allowed for security upgrades.
A total of 73 new, outdoor and indoor security cameras have been installed at Adrian, Rowland and Sunview elementary schools as well as the addition of a main surveillance room at Charles F. Brush High School.
The room allows all security cameras to be monitored from one location.
SE-L partnered with South Euclid and Lyndhurst police departments to earn the "Community Oriented Policing Strategies," or COPS, federal grant, which matches what the district spends for the project.
The grant is part of the Secure our Schools program.
The grant also will allow for the buzzer entry system at the elementary schools to be upgraded. That project is expected to begin this summer.
When the work is completed, the district will have earned $65,000, said Chad Welker, director of Business Services for the district.
While no specific event or concern prompted the upgrades, Welker said it was a way to ensure overall safety.
"It's just being as proactive as possible to provide the highest level of security possible for our students and staff," he said.
The district was required to demonstrate how it collaborates with local police forces to earn the grant. Welker explained that the departments meet monthly with officials from the school to discuss security and communicate daily, as well.
"Security meetings allow all of us to bring forward topics that we think are important to review as far as either trends in security or certain challenges that have been brought up," he said.
