The state Department of Environmental Protection recently announced $62,000 in grants to help 31 small businesses invest in energy efficiency or pollution prevention, including two companies in the midstate.

Appalachian Stone Inc., in Reed Township, Dauphin County, will receive $6,060 through the grant program. The company creates cast and pre-cast concrete products.

In Lebanon County, motorcycle sales business Lebanon Valley Cycles Inc. in Union Township was awarded $6,190 through the grant program.

The Small Business Advantage Grant Program is funded by the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, and provides small businesses with fewer than 100 employees a 50 percent matching grant of up to $7,500. The businesses must implement projects that will save at least $1,000 and 25 percent of their annual pollution prevention or energy costs. The money can be used for installing high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, upgrading insulation, installing high-efficiency lighting or heat pumps or auxiliary power units to save fuel by reducing large truck engine idling.

"This program empowers small-business owners to invest in important upgrades that make the most sense for their business," DEP secretary Mike Krancer said in a statement. "It gives them the opportunity to lower the costs of production, which makes them better environmental stewards and more competitive."
