Grants are a great help for all who wish to start a new business. Although these can be difficult to find, it is worth digging deep to find out what the Government has on offer for us.
Central government has placed the power of grant distribution back into the Assembly's hands. The support varies within each authority when dealing with the way the grants are offered to us and the type of package we can expect.
Small business start-up grants normally help with financing items such as office equipment. The amount of money offered is usually linked to the number of employment opportunities the new business may create, more jobs created equals bigger grants.
Training grants are also offered by many local authorities. Carmarthenshire County Council has recently offered the route to a possible amount up to £10,000 to individuals who wish to learn a new skill or enhance their existing skill set.
In my experience the hardest part of grant applications is finding out what is actually available and it's only after persistent hunting that these potential opportunities become apparent.
In most cases one of the conditions of an approved grant of favourable rate loan is that the business it relates to is operating for a minimum of five years or it requires the monies to be paid back in whole or part.
Social enterprise linked grants are worth investigation as well as grants which support sustainability and 'green' initiatives
When you have identified the right grant scheme for your needs, you will need to provide:
a detailed description of need
an explanation of the potential benefits the grant will bring
a detailed work plan with full costing
details of your own experience and that of other key people and
a business plan.
