SMALL businesses and charities are to be paid to employ students during the summer holidays as part of a new scheme aimed at developing a workforce for the future.

Companies with a turnover below £300,000 a year and registered charities will be eligible for a £1,000 grant towards the cost of employing an undergraduate for eight weeks. Other businesses can also apply to take part but would not receive the grant.

It is hoped that the Undergraduate Internship Scheme – the latest partnership between the government and business aimed at getting people into work -– will help companies tap into the talents of the Island’s young people and give students the chance to gain valuable work experience.

Careers Jersey will also provide a matching service, sending employers details of undergraduates who have the skills that they are looking for.

Sue Walsh, Careers Jersey’s work-related learning manager, urged employers with summer work or projects to come forward.
