VICTORIAN small businesses are leading the country in embracing digital advertising to build their businesses.

More than 65 per cent say they use online directories, websites and social media to attract new customers. Tasmanian businesses lag behind with just four in 10 saying they understand the digital opportunities available.

The research, included in the Sensis Business Index released next week, reveals women are more likely to use digital advertising than men and city businesses had a greater take-up than those in the country.

Nearly seven out of 10 hospitality-related small businesses say they use digital advertising to get customers.
The take-up by communications, property, business, finance and insurance services was also high.

Most businesses use digital advertising to drive sales leads. A quarter are building brand awareness and others use it to maintain relationships, educate customers or increase their visibility.

Simon Betschel, Sensis group manager for emerging business and innovation, said, nationally, 41 per cent of businesses had not tried to increase their understanding of digital advertising in the past year.

THE research comes as the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman reported it received more than 22,000 complaints in the last financial year from small businesses unable to resolve issues with telcos.
